CGI & Scripts
The days when static websites were the norm are long since gone.
Both users and webmasters have come to expect and require some degree
of interactivity. This can be as simple as an information request
form or a guestbook, up to complex, custom-coded dynamic websites,
where content is driven from a database and the pages generated
on the fly as a result of visitor actions.
CGI ('Common Gateway Interface) scripts
came about in the early days of the web. CGI provided a standard
way for webservers to 'talk' to applications (usually written in
Perl, sometimes in C). Webservers often provided a 'cgi-bin' directory
in which these scripts could be installed and from which they could
be executed. There are thousands of freeware and commercial scripts
that allow you to add very specific kinds of functionality to your
website. All of our Linux/Unix hosting plans include a cgi-bin directory
with permissions set appropriately.
Sunserver Networks, Inc. has evaluated a huge number
of these CGI scripts over the past few years for security, safety,
functionality and appearance. These scripts are listed below with
a brief explanation of what they do, whether they are freeware,
or commercial scripts, and costs, if any, to have them installed.
We will be happy to evaluate and install
for you any commercial or freeware CGI or script. Contact one of
our engineers at (651) 687-9684
